How to get your garage back in a single day

The usual garage cleanout goes like this: you pull everything onto the driveway, you get about forty percent through sorting it, it starts to rain or it gets dark, and you put most of it back. Six months later you try again.

The failure is always the same. Sorting and disposing got mixed together, so nothing left the property.

Separate the two jobs

Sorting is a decision job. Disposing is a logistics job. If you try to do both at once you will stall on the second one, because taking six carloads to a transfer station on a Saturday is nobody’s idea of a weekend.

The method

• Book the haul for the end of the day, before you start sorting, because a deadline you have paid for is a deadline that holds
• Work in one direction round the garage. Do not roam
• Three piles only: keep, go, genuinely unsure
• Put a hard cap on "unsure" at one bin. When it is full, the next unsure item is a go
• Do not open boxes you have not opened in two years. If it has not been missed, it is a go

Why the truck at the end matters

Once the "go" pile physically leaves, the job is done and cannot un-do itself. That is the entire trick. Everything else is just moving things around your own driveway.
